  • Brainstorming sessions are usually full of energy. Everyone has a voice, and everyone feels the charge that comes from flexing their creative muscles. The problem is, what happens afterwards? How do you keep the spark alive while translating your big ideas into concrete results?

Oftentimes, teams forget the important step of determining what to do after brainstorming to ensure good ideas are nurtured and excitement stays high. Use the tips below before, during and after your brainstorm to harness your team’s brightest ideas.

    • At the beginning of the brainstorm, explain what you’re hoping to achieve and what will happen after the meeting. This makes the objective of the idea session clear so everyone pulls toward the same goal. Write these points on a Post-it® Super Sticky Easel Pad to keep them front and center throughout the brainstorm.
    • Designate who will record your team’s ideas and digitize them if necessary. Assigning this role to one team member means others can focus on generating ideas without worrying they’ll slip through the cracks.
    • During the meeting, set aside time for both individual and group brainstorming so team members with different work styles all have an opportunity to contribute.
    • At the end of the brainstorm, tell your team who will make decisions about implementing ideas and how the ideas will be assessed. If possible, allow team members to vote for their favorite ideas using Post-it® Flags, or evaluate them together using a pros and cons list or a SWOT analysis.
    • Take a few minutes at the end of the meeting to identify next steps and assign owners. Post this information on a Post-it® Super Sticky Dry Erase Surface or Easel Sheet so everyone can take note.
    • After the meeting, identify when the team will regroup and what the agenda of your next gathering will cover. Share this information with team members as soon as possible to help maintain momentum.
    • If one of your team member’s ideas is implemented, be sure to give credit where it’s due: send them a congratulatory message to show you appreciate their work, and highlight their accomplishment at your next team gathering.

Don’t let the great ideas your team generates in brainstorms slip away. With a little proactive planning, you can translate your ideas into the strategic actions you need to achieve your goals.
